Dublin-based commercial fit-out contractor Cluna Contracts is marking a decade in business, having completed 36 gym and leisure centre fit-outs across Ireland alongside a significant volume of maintenance, renovation and upgrade projects for some of the country's busiest fitness operators.

Building Ireland Magazine reports that the company, founded by Peter McGarry, has built a specialist niche in the gym, leisure centre and retail fit-out sector, growing its client base through word of mouth from an initial Anytime Fitness project in Kilmainham to a roster that now includes Aura Leisure, BD Gyms, Bondi Pilates, Trib3, Energie Fitness and Club Pilates.

"We've done everything from fitouts of small class-based gyms to full commercial gyms, spin studios, Pilates studios and leisure centre fitouts and also gym renovations," said McGarry. "Since Covid, there has been a fitness explosion in Ireland. Young people in particular nowadays are big into their fitness. We've converted old schools, basketball courts, sports halls and even pubs into gyms. We look after every aspect of the fitout from start to finish."

The Aura Holohan Group, Ireland's largest operator in the fitness and leisure sector with 12 Aura Leisure Centres, six Anytime Fitness clubs and over 450 employees, is Cluna Contracts' longest-standing client. Recent completions include fit-outs for Aura Leisure in Drogheda and Limerick, Anytime Fitness in Kilnamanagh Shopping Centre, and Club Pilates in Sandyford, marking the studio brand's first Irish location.

The company is currently delivering a 10,000 sq ft UFC Gym at Point Square in Dublin city centre, which will be the first outlet of the MMA-inspired fitness franchise to open in Ireland.

McGarry noted that ongoing maintenance and repair work forms a substantial component of the business alongside new fit-outs. "Some of our customers have 7,000 or 8,000 members. We're always busy renovating changing rooms and locker rooms," he said.

Cluna Contracts works with a consistent team of specialist subcontractors including NCCP, Celt Engineering, Greywood, Leinster Painting, Aesthetic Flooring, LT Electrical and JD Electrical, and sources materials from suppliers including Chadwicks, PFL and H&V Bathrooms and Tiles.
