GLL completes major fitout at East Belfast gym

GLL, the Northern Ireland-based social enterprise operating public leisure facilities under its Better brand, has officially opened its largest-ever reinvestment in Belfast at Better Gym Connswater.

The refurbishment transforms the gym into one of East Belfast’s premier fitness destinations, providing state-of-the-art equipment, modern interiors, and enhanced community spaces.

Works began in November 2025, with the gym reopening on 5 January 2026. The newly refurbished facility has already attracted 300 residents in its first two weeks, highlighting immediate engagement with the local community.

The project introduces advanced Technogym cardio and strength equipment, functional training zones enhanced by immersive lighting, and a redesigned welcome and members’ area. Improvements throughout the facility enhance accessibility and create a more community-focused layout.

Head of Service at GLL Jacqui Pope said, “This transformation of Better Gym Connswater represents the single largest reinvestment GLL has ever made in a Belfast facility, and it reflects our long-term commitment to supporting the health, wellbeing and social connection of local communities. Every upgrade, every detail, and every choice has been made with our members at the centre.”

The refurbishment follows major 2025 upgrades at Ballysillan, Whiterock, and Falls leisure centres, forming part of GLL’s ongoing commitment to modernising Belfast’s public leisure infrastructure. Councillor Ruth Brooks, Chair of Belfast City Council’s People and Communities Committee, commented: “Having high-quality leisure facilities plays a huge part in our efforts to encourage more people in our community to lead healthier and more active lives.”
