Henderson Retail has reopened SPAR Whiteabbey after a £278,787 refit that adds a Delish hot food counter, three self-checkouts and a Post Office. The upgrade shows a large local operator reshaping a neighbourhood convenience store around food to go, fresh grocery and in-store services.
The fresh offer now includes Carrick’s Fergus Butchery range of pre-packed meat and value bundles made fresh daily, alongside products from local suppliers such as Asher’s Bakery and a range of SPAR own-brand prepared meals. The Delish grab and go counter provides self-serve hot baps and wraps for breakfast and Chicken Pick ’n’ Mix for lunch, while a Delish hot bar serves hot meals through breakfast and lunchtime.
The store keeps its Barista Bar coffee, with two self-serve machines upgraded to a menu that adds more than 30 items, oat milk as standard, decaffeinated espresso-based drinks and trend-led options including Matcha and Chai.
Henderson Retail belongs to the family-owned Henderson Group, based in Mallusk. The group reported 2025 turnover of £1.5 billion, up 8.7 per cent, and pre-tax profit of £76 million, up from £62.9 million, and it employs more than 5,600 people.
The group’s retail arm runs around 100 company-owned convenience stores and forecourts under the SPAR and EUROSPAR brands, and invested £30 million across its estate in 2024 alone, a pattern of regular store reinvestment that Whiteabbey continues.
The structural driver is the shift of neighbourhood convenience towards prepared food and in-store services, with the refit adding a hot food counter, self-checkouts and a Post Office to serve a wider range of local shopper missions.
“There is so much newness in-store that caters to local shopper missions, from additional fresh grocery products including Carrick’s Fergus Butchery range, to our new Delish hot food offering,” said store manager Wilson Pradez.
“It is our mission to provide high-quality services and the best local products for our shoppers at SPAR Whiteabbey,” Pradez added.
The store has supported Marie Curie as SPAR’s charity partner for almost 10 years, alongside local foodbanks, churches, community groups, resident associations and sports clubs, and is running a 40 Big Deals of Christmas promotion until December.
For the sector, SPAR Whiteabbey shows convenience operators using modest refit budgets to add food to go and services to an existing community store.
