Isle of Man Steam Packet undertakes €30 million Ben-my-Chree ferry refurbishment
The Isle of Man Steam Packet has launched a major interior refurbishment of its Ben-my-Chree ferry, marking a significant fit out project valued at approximately €30 million. The upgrade aims to modernise public areas and enhance facilities for passengers on routes to Dublin and Larne.
“This substantial refurbishment will modernise the public areas and enhance facilities for passengers using the routes to Ireland,” said Brian Thomson, managing director of Steam Packet.
The project is tied to a broader service expansion. For the first time in over 15 years, three vessels will operate on a regular schedule to and from Ireland outside the TT period. Peak season will see five weekly sailings, while off-season services will maintain three sailings a week to Larne, Northern Ireland.
Beyond passenger comfort, the refurbishment supports commercial opportunities. The updated Ben-my-Chree will facilitate freight and business links between the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland. The reallocation of vessels also allows the Manannan and Manxman to increase service on core routes, adapting schedules based on demand.
Thomson emphasised the strategic investment: “We are investing heavily in growing our business and, as a result, the economic and social opportunities for the Isle of Man.” He also warned that success depends on utilisation: “We cannot afford to back an initiative that loses money over the long term. We’re making a two-year commitment to the new routes to Ireland today.”
The refurbishment and fit out work will involve contractors across multiple disciplines, including interior design, passenger facility upgrades, and technical retrofitting.
The upgraded Ben-my-Chree and expanded timetable will be operational from the 2026/27 sailing season, running through late May 2027, reinforcing the Steam Packet’s commitment to improved maritime infrastructure and passenger experience.
