The Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has initiated a £12.4 million refurbishment scheme for 109 homes in the Creggan Heights estate, Derry. The project targets properties over 70 years old, modernising them with cavity wall insulation, new flooring, bathrooms, kitchens, solar panels, and roof improvements.

Construction company Combined Facilities Management has been appointed to deliver the extensive works. The programme is designed to enhance energy efficiency, safety, and comfort for residents while future-proofing the estate for decades ahead. The improvements also support local employment and skills development, providing opportunities for construction and tradespeople within the region.

Grainia Long, NIHE’s chief executive, described the project as a “very significant investment” that will benefit both residents and the wider community. She highlighted the importance of delivering safe, warm, and cost-effective homes while contributing to local economic activity through job creation and workforce development.

Eddie Doherty, west area manager, added that the upgrades would provide modern, comfortable living spaces for families who have long been part of Creggan Heights. He emphasised the project’s value to residents, noting the attention to creating homes that meet contemporary standards without displacing the community.

This refurbishment complements NIHE’s broader initiatives in Derry, including the near-complete restoration of Pump Street, a four-storey Georgian townhouse being converted from offices into four residential apartments at a cost of nearly £1 million.
